Holy Cross Day
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This is sent this day to call us to a time of prayer in the week ahead. On Wednesday, September 19, the House of Bishops will convene in New Orleans and continue with the work that we began in March 2007. Prayerfully we will endeavour to find a common ground that will provide for an equitable response to the recommendations of the Windsor Report and the Primates Communique.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, and several Primates from the Joint Standing Committee will be with us for this important time within the life of the wider Anglican Communion.
While we pray for a responsive and positive outcome to this work, once the meeting of the House of Bishops adjourns, the Archbishop of Canterbury will be consulting with other Primates to consider the response of the Communion. It is anticipated their response will come in a timely manner.
I wish there was more that I could share at this time, however, everything rests upon the posture taken by the assembled bishops. Please know that I will share as much as is known in a Pastoral Letter that will be issued immediately following the conclusion of the meeting on September 25.
In the mean time, please join me beginning this day, and in the days ahead, in the following prayer.
“O God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, our only Saviour, the Prince of Peace: Give us grace seriously to lay to heart the great dangers we are in by our unhappy divisions; take away all hatred and prejudice, and whatever else may hinder us from godly union and concord; that, as there is but one Body and one Spirit, one hope of our calling, one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, one God and Father of us all, so we may be all of one heart and of one soul, united in one holy bond of truth and peace, of faith and charity, and may with one mind and one mouth glorify you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen” [BCP p.818]
Faithfully in Christ, and with my prayers for you.
The Rt. Rev’d D. Bruce MacPherson
