Anglican Communion Network Affiliates Can Help “Save Darfur” by Supporting Emergency Relief Efforts Spearheaded by Local Parish

Pittsburgh, PA – Anglican Communion Network (ACN) affiliates have an extraordinary opportunity to support the efforts of St. Bartholomew’s, an ACN parish located in Nashville, Tennessee. St. Bartholomew’s is coordinating a nationwide appeal to “Save Darfur” with Bishop Andudu Adam Elnail, the Bishop of the Kadugli/Nuba Mountains Diocese, Episcopal Church of Sudan. The goal is to provide emergency relief aid to the Darfurians in this region.

As many as 400,000 people have died and millions have been forcibly displaced due to the continuing attacks on the Darfur province in western Sudan by the government of Sudan’s ruling Islamist regime and their proxy militias, “Janjaweed.” Over 2,000 Darfurian men, women, and children have fled for their lives, walking more than 1,000 miles to find refuge in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. There they sleep on the bare ground in tents the U.N provides. Nuba Christians and Muslims alike, who themselves know what it is like to be the victims of genocide and ethnic cleansing, are sharing what little they have with these most recent victims of Khartoum’s jihad. The Darfurian refugees are traumatized; many have witnessed the slaughter of their families. They are also in great physical need of food, blankets, and eating and cooking utensils.

The Anglican Communion Network, based in Pittsburgh, and The Institute on Religion and Democracy, based in Washington, D.C., are official supporters of the relief campaign. The ACN has created a downloadable service leaflet insert that local congregations can make available to their members to educate them about the emergency appeal for Sudan. The insert is available at the ACN’s website at:

“World Mission Sunday is February 18 this year and would be a perfect time for parishes to highlight this important issue,” said the Rev. John Cruikshank, ACN Director for Mission. “There are many organizations that are working to help ‘Save Darfur’ but we applaud and want to support the efforts one of our own local parishes who is willing to spearhead this emergency relief appeal through one of the Sudanese bishops who can ensure that relief funds are quickly distributed where they are most needed.”

Financial contributions are being collected by St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal/Anglican Church. The funds will be wired to the Nuba Relief and Rehabilitation Development Organization (NRRDO) where they will be used to purchase food, blankets, and eating and cooking utensils for the Darfurian refugees. Checks should be made payable to St. Bartholomew’s with “Darfurians in Nuba Relief Fund” in the memo section and sent with an accompanying note to 4800 Belmont Park Terrace, Nashville, TN, 37215.
