Chris Johnson has his latest Anglican Investigator series up, at least the first part. Made me think of Bizarro Superman.
The crazy part is, as the Episcopal/Anglican world fractures, it is easy to forget (especially if you really didn’t know in the first place) that we really were one Christian family, and a small one and that when you think about it, particularly in the instance of the Episcopal Church.
Sometime, to journey into Bizarro land, you should check out who ordained and consecrated who by going to ECDPlus – the Episcopal directory of clergy.
Well for instance – did you know that Bishop Schofield was ordained to diaconate by Bishop Pike? That his co-consecrators were Bishops Browning and Swing?
Things that make you go, hmmmmm. And I say, co-consecrators lightly, inasmuch as wherever Browning appears, you can bet it was because he was PB and technically chief consecrator. But, the outgoing Diocesan Bishop is usually involved and is kind of a so what from that standpoint.
How about some others? Like my own bishop had, as co-consecrators, William Smalley (Bishop of Kansas who later that year would announce his intentions to bless same sex unions) and Bishop Borsch (well, his old boss form Los Angeles.)
Bishop Duncan, the Moderator of the Anglican Communion Network, had as co-consecrators Peter Lee and Edmund Browning.
Bishop Howe, on the other hand, was consecrated by Browning (he was PB) and the Bishop of Pittburgh, Hathaway, and Bishop Frey of Colorado. Incredible conservative credentials…
Yes, Bishop Browning laid hands on Iker too. He also laid hands on Bishop Jenkins of Louisiana – along with Bishops Brown (no surprise) and Bishop Salmon of South Carolina. Jenkins is a Nashotah House grad as well. (Note: Bishop Jenkins emailed and said that Griswold, not Browning, consecrated him.)
So, take a look around and who ordained and consecrated who on ECDPlus and find the bizarre. Of course, some things just aren’t so bizarre, like the fact that Bishop Robinson came up in the Diocese of Newark.
On a more theological note, it is precisely why the Donatist heresy is a heresy. It is also why sacraments are outward and visiable signs of inward and spiritual graces, but that the outward sign can be meaningless if the spiritual grace does not accompany it.
